Discovering the Treatments of Tomorrow . . . T O D A Y

Chronic pain conditions can impact an individual’s quality of life and cause impairment in his or her sleep, personal care, employment, and personal life.  MRN conducts placebo-controlled clinical trials or studies with medications ranging from marketed analgesics to newer or recently developed medications which are not yet available to the general public.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can result from an injury or it can occur for no apparent reason.  Chronic pain limits your functioning in everyday activities, and can lead to inactivity, weight gain, loss of sleep, and depression.  Common cause of chronic pain can include:

r arthritis
r back pain

r neck pain

r fibromyalgia

r diabetic neuropathy

r carpal tunnel syndrome

r migraines or cluster headaches

r complex regional pain syndrome or RSD

r or other chronic pain that causes you to take medication on a daily basis

Low Back Pain

Back pain is ranked second only to headaches as the most frequent cause of pain.  Four out of five adults will experience an episode of back pain at some time in their lives.  Back pain can occur following an injury, or can occur for no apparent reason.  If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you may be suffering from low back pain:

r back pain when you bend

r back pain upon standing, sitting, or walking too long

r back muscle strain or spasms

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy is a nerve disorder caused by diabetes.  Up to 60% of patients with diabetes may have some form of neuropathy.  If you have diabetes and have been experiencing pain in your feet, legs, or hands, you may be suffering from neuropathy. If you have any of the following symptoms you may be suffering from diabetic neuropathy:

r sharp pains in your feet or legs

r tingling, burning, or pricking sensations in your feet or legs

r extreme sensitivity to touch in your feet or legs

r loss of sleep due to the pain

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is usually caused by the compression of nerves in your back, and can result from an injury or repetitive stress on your back.  If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you may be suffering from radiculopathy:

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic Neuralgia or Shingles is a second outbreak of the virus that causes chickenpox.  Once the virus is active again, it travels along your nerves to your skin and produces a painful rash and blisters.  If it has been 3 months or more since your last shingles rash healed and you are still experiencing pain, you may be suffering from Post–Herpetic Neuralgia or PHN.

PHN occurs as a result of damage to your nerves during the shingles outbreak.  It can happen in up to 15% of people who have had a shingles outbreak, and can affect as many as 50% to 80% of elderly patients with shingles. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you may be suffering from Post–Herpetic Neuralgia:

r pain in the area where the rash used to be
r pain that is sharp, jabbing, or burning
r itching or numbness near the shingles area

r skin sensitivity

r loss of sleep due to the pain
